What is Power Flushing?
Central heating systems are made up from many different metals, including steel radiators. With water flowing around the system to carry the required heat it is only natural that over time the steel radiators will start to rust. This water gets pumped around the system at quite high speeds and slows down within the radiators. When central heating is turned off the iron sludge settles in radiators and pipes at the bottom of the system and stops water flowing correctly. If left itwill eventually block the pipes to radiators and other components, like the diverter valve, which determines whether you have central heating or hot water or both.
With power flushing, as the name suggests, a larger pump is temporarily placed in the pipework system. This is then used to pump cleansing agents and mild additives around the system to enable dislodging the sludge deposits within the system.
Power flushing is quite a lengthy process and in an average house it can take nearly all day to remove the sludge and cleaning chemicals from the system.
As long as the sludge is not allowed to build up too much then the central heating systemcan often be returned back to normal running conditions.
All manufacturers insist that a heating system is power flushed before a new boiler is fitted to the system, otherwise they may void the warranty.
